Bali is by far the single most visited island in Indonesia, with thousands of tourists flocking to the small island every year. In fact, Bali alone accounts for over eighty percent of Indonesia's tourism, and with good reason. From surfing to backpacking to simply relaxing at Villa Batavia Bali, the Island of the Gods can offer something to everyone regardless of their income, age, or interests. While many come for the scenic beauty and outstanding nightlife, many visitors find themselves transfixed by the rich culture that seems to seep from every corner of the island.
Bali stands out from most of Indonesia in that its chief religion is Hinduism, while most of the other islands adhere to Islam. As visitors travel through Bali, they'll see signs of the island's deep religious beliefs everywhere they turn, whether they realize it at the time or not. Offerings known as 'canang sari' are everywhere, tiny leaf trays that are made daily and filled with a wide array of offerings such as cookies, coffee, flowers, and salt. If you venture out of the walls of Villa Batavia Bali, you'll likely end up stepping on one of these small offerings, and that is exactly their intent as they are swept away and replaced each day with new ones.
While these offerings may be inconspicuous, it is impossible to miss the vast assortment of religious sculptures that permeate Bali. Balinese sculptors are absolute masters of their craft, as is evidenced by their handiwork. Courtyards and numerous temples cover the island, and each of these holds an assortment of different sculptures depicting different gods or goddesses. Even guardians and protective demons can be found throughout the island.
One of the favorite religious aspects for tourists to witness is the many types of traditional music, puppet shows, and dances practiced across the island. Barong, for example, is a very common type of show that depicts the battle of good versus evil. A quick trip outside of Villa Batavia Bali will likely lead you to encounter a Barong dance being performed. A kecak, or 'monkey dance', is staged every night at the amazing Uluwatu Temple, and often features over two hundred and fifty dancers. No matter what aspect of the religious culture of Bali you see, it will likely leave you feeling mystified.
